Lobong Bali Cooking Class

The best experience in Indonesia after 3 months. 10/10!

Sangde picked us up at the hostel, and we started the day at the market, walking around while he explained the basis of all Balinese cuisine - basa gede -. A wonderful blend of 11 fresh and local ingredients.

The balance of its cuisine with what its surroundings offer is truly incredible. Enviable from my point of view.

After touring the entire market getting to know a little about the local culture, we went to the family house - a marvel taken care of in detail. 21 members of the Sang family live in it as a community, after several generations caring for and perfecting a small corner of Ubud that they all take care of with care and with gratitude to previous generations.

We started cooking the main dishes on the menu with his help and that of his family. Lots of space, very well organized, everything very fresh, and a lot of information at each step with perfect and understandable English.

We thoroughly enjoyed every part of the kitchen, we learned a lot, and we ate what is undoubtedly the best meal of these 3 months in the country.

A lot of love, a lot of patience, a lot of balance, and a lot of history in each dish.

He also invited us to see the family temple up close, informing us of a thousand details while his mother gave offerings at different points.

Nothing I tell you is going to bring you closer to what we experienced, so you will have to experience it for yourself!

Infinitely grateful and happy for this experience, much more than a simple Balinese cooking class.

This cooking class was simply amazing. It wasn’t just a Balinese cooking class but a full experience learning about Balinese culture and and visiting a Balinese family compound where multiple generations live together. Our morning class started with a visit to a traditional market learning about the different foods and spices used in Balinese cooking and even sampling some indigenous fruits. Then, Sang Made took us to his family compound where the cooking class is held. We joined the class as 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 13 and 9). Though we initially worried that the class might be a bit long for our kids, they absolutely loved it and were involved hands-on in every single step of the cooking process. Every dish is made from scratch with fresh ingredients and tastes amazing. We learned so much and were so inspired. After cooking a full course meal, we were served the meal for lunch, beautifully plated and presented by Sang Made and his family. My kids said the food we made and ate today is without question the best food they have eaten here. We are so glad we had the privilege of having this experience with Sang Made and his family. Thank you so much for all the love and care you put into our class today.

Wow what an amazing experience. Couldn't believe I could cook such amazing food and got to see a traditional Balinese family home. Will definitely do this again when I'm next in Bali again.

We had an amazing time with this cooking class. The market tour was incredibly insightful to learn about common Balinese ingredients and experience how the locals shop. Sang Made is an incredible guide and instructor. He is very knowledgeable and speaks fantastic English. He was patient & kind with our novice chefs and plethora or questions. His family home is beautiful and it was incredibly humbling to be welcomed there for the class. The meals we prepared were fantastic. They were also accommodating to allergies and dietary preferences, which we appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend booking with them!

Not only did we cook and eat the Balinees dishes. Mister Sunday showed and taught us as all about the food, the market, the culture, life in his family temple, and life in Bali. After helping him and his family with chopping and cooking they served us our 3-courses we prepared. Excited to share these Balinees dishes with my family and friends back home. Highly recommended!

Wow! This was by far one of the best cultural cooking classes I have ever experienced.

We had a great experience with Lobong Bali Cooking Class during our stay in Ubud. We were picked up at our hotel and were welcomed into our teachers family home where we learned to make delicious Balinese food, in the most beautiful and authentic setting. Highlights: a visit to the local morning market, learning about Balinese food ánd Balinese life/culture/traditions in general and being able to really participate in the cooking process. Easily one of the best cooking classes I ever attended, would 100% recommend!

Amazing food and experience

'Not just a cooking class, it's a Balinese cultural experience in itself. ' My husband and I attended Sang Made Merta's class. Before the class we were not sure what to expect and kept wondering why the class would be 5 hours long. Made does not only teach Balinese cooking but he teaches the Bali culture. We started the class with a visit to the market where he introduced us to several produces used in Balinese cooking. Made and his family welcomed us to their home and introduced us to their culture and traditions. We had much fun chopping, cooking and learning techniques. Made is an amazing person with a very positive vibe. His english communication is very good. He doesn't rush you into doing and finishing things. We couldn't have asked for a better Bali cooking class experience than this. If you are in Ubud and want to learn Bali cooking, Made is the person to go to.:)

Would 100% recommend, we were invited into A Beautiful family home, even if you cannot cook you will not feel out of place as each task is shared by the group and you are shown and how to prepare everything, food was amazing and I now have the receipies to try when I return home

This was the highlight of our Bali trip!

We had the most wonderful experience at our cooking class with Sang Made! Our day started with a local market tour, where Sang Made introduced us to traditional Balinese spices and local fruits. It was so great to have an authentic market experience and meet the local community.

Then we were welcomed into his home, where we learnt about Balinese family traditions and the intentional layout of a home. This is a family-run business and we had such a warm welcome.

The cooking class was fantastic! Sang Made carefully explained every step and process, and we had so much fun learning how much love and effort goes into an authentic Balinese meal. Enjoying our cooking at the end was very rewarding, and delicious!

The whole experience was fantastic. We first went to a market to see and learn about the ingredients we would be cooking with and then went to their beautiful family home to cook. We learned so much, and the meal was hands down the best one we had in Bali. Highly recommend this experience!

Cannot recommend this experience enough. We did the private cooking class today and it was amazing from start to finish. We've been coming to Bali for years but learnt more about the culture, community, traditions and food in the first 5 minutes than we have in the last decade. The food was hands down the best Balinese food we have ever tried and the family compound where the class is held was a hidden oasis. Sang Made and his family were absolutely wonderful to us and we cannot thank them enough!

Made (the host) is knowledgeable and eloquent about not just Balinese food but also Balinese lifestyle in general. As such you will learn not just about cooking but local shopping practises in the market, local culture, and even local architecture.

Recommend to take the morning class to be able to visit the market, even bought cheap and fresh fruits to bring back to my hotel
