Had SUCH a great experience here tonight! So much fun and loved learning more about the culture, because food is culture and they did such a good job of sharing the love of both. Thank you so much Oleg (apologies i know i’m not spelling that right!) and Wayan! Both amazing people sharing a part of their culture with me. Definitely taking this with me as one of my best experiences in Bali <3!

Oh, side note, by the way the food is DELICIOUS, lolol.

We toured the Gianyar market on Thursday evening and it was an incredible experience. Our host explains the different dishes to us, he is super friendly and we talk about culture. A super authentic moment, accompanied by a local. I highly recommend!

We loved this cooking class! Each day has a different menu and we did Tuesday’s, which was very vegan friendly. Started the day with a tour of the local market. Learned a lot about the raw ingredients there. Enjoyed learning traditional Balinese cooking techniques. Loved everything we made, the flavors were incredible! Got a recipe booklet to take home too.

Monday Focus on Fish Cooking Class. What I liked about the class was its central location in Ubud amidst a beautifully landscaped guesthouse compound. It’s pleasant to learn how to cook in such a charming environment. We had a small group (which was rare in recent history for them) and started out with hisbiscus tea and coffee. We had a very happy and enthusiastic instructor who was also keen to share stories about Balinese customs and herself. After they explained and demoed the ingredients we could all try our hand at chopping etc. My preferred dish turned out to be the Kangkong.

Not a lot of cooking nor learning, so we didn’t feel we got our moneys worth. It was more like watch how your meal is cooked and help by doing some chopping. A few things that would have made this better considering the limitation of a single cooking area:
- Smaller class size: 1 instructor for ~20 people is too little
- Cook a dish, eat a dish. Cook, eat. Repeat. Instead it was eating everything at the end. By waiting to eat, I had forgot what ingredients were in each dish, and I got bored of just watching.
- Do the chopping and prep for us, and let us do more cooking
- Reduce the downtime and filler, or just shorten the class time. While I enjoyed talking to other people there, we came for the cooking experience

I will say that the instructor was knowledgeable, warm and charismatic, which helped carry the class, but I think the entire format needs to be revisited to justify the cost

It was a very interesting and fun experience! We booked the tuesday course including a market tour, which was really great - since we actually didn't even know where the market moved to (the current Ubud market place is under construction).
The cooking class itself is maybe not a typical cooking class, since everyone was helping for the big picture and not cooking a full meal. But at the end of the day you will learn the basic steps either by being a volunteer once or by watching someone else doing it.
Also our cooking teacher Ibu Day was so lovely and funny, that I would definitely do this again!

OK food demonstration class rather than a cooking lesson.

We were asked to get there for 8am, as we were staying outside of Ubud so had to leave at 7.30am to get there on time. We didn't actually start the tour until 9 so was just sat around waiting for an hour. I think it was due to the rain, but we still ended up leaving in the rain.

The market tour was ok, lasted about an hour or so, and then we walked to the cooking school. The area was beautiful and the kitchen was a good size and open air. We had a few snacks which were needed due to the early morning start and by the time we actually started cooking it was 11am. We chopped the herbs and vegetables and then watched them cook the food, with us taking it in turns to stir the curries etc. The cooks were friendly and informative but felt like it went on too long and we didn't do much cooking.

Personally I wouldn't recommend if you're looking for a hands on cooking class and it was lots of standing around and listening and walking. The food was tasty enough but would of been better if we felt like we had made it ourselves.

The class and guide was overall good. We did the Thursday morning market tour and it is important to note that the actual cooking only lasts for about 1.5 hours.

We spent to long (1.5 hour) at the market with a lot of information that was repeated when we started cooking.

The class went an hour over time which makes it difficult to have other plans the same day.

Oleg (the instructor) was funny, very helpful and has clearly been working in a kitchen for a long time. It was nice to have an experienced chef to work with.

Other classes might be better than the market tour.

After booking online, it took them three days so see my booking and then asking me if I was still interested. After my response, I took another 2 message son my side to finally have a response from them. So I decided to cancel everything and go with another cooking school.
I also read reviews that said it's more a long talk than a cooking class as all the prep is already done and that's not what I am looking for when taking a cooking class.

The staff was very friendly, however, you should know this is almost all a long talk and demonstration. The instructor talks for quite a while.more than an hour.then you watch her make your lunch. Then you eat and are given some ice crwam someone made later. I was hoping for a bit more hands on other than chopping some chilis for the group meal.

So cool to learn about the ingredients, methods and transitions. Highly recommend signing up for a class.

It is owned by an Austrian lady and it is very well organized. It is a beautiful area! The food is very delicious as well. They teach you about indonesian food and spices. It is more watching than handson cooking. You will have the option to chop some vegetables and wokking some food but that's it. If you don't mind than this is a good class for you.

Great instructor, shares her experiences in Bali so you can understand the culture, lots of hints to maximise the flavour of the food. The result was better than many of the top class restaurants in Ubud. Not cheap but highly recommended.
